Earlier, when we discussed volunteering as a means of getting a background in event planning and acquiring experience to help you get an event planner job we mentioned that we would share a priceless tip to help you get the experience you need to land a fabulous event planner job. Well here is that tip:

There is an internet site called 4 Labors of Love. This site lists the types of jobs one might seek out of a genuine love for the work - it includes volunteer positions. And guess what? It often lists volunteer opportunities in the field of event planning in nation-wide locations.

If you feel you need to gain some hands-on experience as an event planner, head on over to that site and take a look at the opportunities it lists when you run a search on "events" in their section of volunteer opportunities. With the help of that site, you could end up finding a terrific volunteer opportunity in event planning that enables you to get some valuable experience as an event planner faster than you ever anticipated as possible.

In the end, not only will you have gained valuable work experience which will ultimately help you to land a terrific paid event planner job, but many of the volunteer opportunities will be deeply life enriching experiences all on their own. You'll achieve the pride and satisfaction which comes with knowing that you have done something good; that you have given yourself to a worthy cause and you have helped to make the world a better place, in your own little way, all while moving yourself closer to getting the type of event planner job you really want.

What's more, in some cases you will have wonderful opportunities to experience things or meet incredible people that you otherwise would never have had. Just as one example, one of the volunteer opportunities which recently came up on a search for volunteer opportunities using the key word "event" on the 4 Labors of Love site was the opportunity to assist at functions which will feature such influential and infamous speakers as Maya Angelou, Gloria Steinem, and Debbie Fields (as in Mrs. Fields Cookies). How would you enjoy that? Talk about benefits!

Make a point of checking the listings often for new opportunities in your area. At the very minimum, seeing these postings should start to get you excited about the very real opportunities available to you to gain valuable experience in event planning through volunteering. As you read through the listings it should give you a very clear picture of the types of organizations that would welcome your offer to work on their events. If you don't see any postings for opportunities in your region, start calling upon organizations in your area which are similar to the ones you do see postings for - someone will likely snap you up in a hurry.

You should also take note of the fact that the 4 Labors of Love site allows you to register to include yourself in it's data base - something we highly recommend - so that groups or organizations which are planning events and need volunteers will contact you. Life just got a little easier!

But, if you think that's good, it gets even better because this same site also allows you to search for internship opportunities as well as paying job opportunities. It's usually got a good selection of paying event planning positions, making it a site you'll definitely want to book-mark and visit frequently as you embark on your quest for a event planner job you'll love.

A search of the site's Job Opportunities section using the search term "event" recently resulted in all sorts of excellent entry-level opportunities. As one example, take a look at this gem:

Location of Job: White Plains, NY

Job Description:
Neiman Marcus. It is a name known all over the world for the highest quality of merchandise and a luxurious shopping experience second to none. Our taste is exquisite and our customer service commitment unbeatable. We are now looking for a Public Relations Assistant to join us in our PR Department. Experience:

Although experience would be wonderful, it is not required. What we really look for is an outgoing personality, a high level of enthusiasm and motivation, a willingness to learn".

The listing then goes on to provide contact information.

Can you say, "O-p-p-o-r-t-u-n-i-t-y"? You see, when we told you there are excellent event planner jobs available which do not require experience or special training, but merely a fabulous attitude, enthusiasm, and the willingness to learn, we mean business! A job such as this one with a prestigous company such as Neiman Marcus would definitely get your event planning career off to a strong start. So keep your eyes open; jobs like this one are out there, it's just a matter of waiting for the right one to come along, and knowing how to spot it.

That's why you need to keep your eyes open constantly. Where ever you go, where ever you are, look for opportunity - paid or even unpaid if need be. You need to be checking the job boards constantly. Keep your eyes open for new job boards as you cruise the internet. There are hundreds of such boards, so it's absolutely not feasible to list them all here. We've included a few just to get you started, but as you are surfing the net and come upon others, pop in to run a search on "event" and the other related terms - and bookmark the ones that produce a decent selection of listings.

Other sites which offer nationwide listings for volunteer opportunities - event planning included - are:

You can also use IdeaList to help you find internships, as well. And speaking of internships, it's also worth keeping an eye on the listings at Rising Start Internships. Rising Star includes an event planning category, however, the job selection listed does tend to fluctuate. If you don't find a great selection of event planner jobs on your first visit, make a note to head back over and check again every few weeks for new listings which have been added.

One final word about volunteer opportunities. It's very important to approach the volunteer work you do to gain experience with the same level of commitment and seriousness you would give to a paying employer.

Remember that the organizations which are giving you the chance to volunteer for them are giving you a valuable opportunity; be sure to reward them with the level of service that they deserve in return. The individuals you work for when volunteering can definately be used as referances when you are applying for paying event planner jobs in the future, so if that's what it takes, let that be your guide in honoring your commitments to them.
