So, now that you know who the employers of event planners are, how do you find the ones who are hiring? Fortunately there are a lot of resources available to you. We've discussed a few of the more specialized approaches that relate to some of the specific types of employers, but now let's look at the methods which will apply right across the board.

Event Planning Job Boards on the Net

The internet has a number of job boards devoted exclusively to event planner jobs and the event planning industry. Some of these boards are focused primarily on the meeting planning sector, which is absolutely fantastic for you if this is where your main area of interest lies.

If not, they are worth checking nonetheless. If you find a job you are qualified to apply for, perhaps an entry level opportunity, it could be hugely beneficial to check into it for the opportunity to gain experience. While it is true that it's always better to get experience within the sector you are interested in for the long run, some experience will usually be better than no experience in ultimately getting you to where you want to go.

In addition to that, occasionally you will find posts on the meeting planning job boards from employers in other sectors of the event planning field, or from general event planning firms, which may be of interest to you.

And don't forget that you can always place a posting of your own on one of these job boards, indicating the type of event planning jobs you are looking for, and inviting prospective employers to contact you.

Event Planning Industry Bulletin Boards

Some bulletin boards on the internet which serve the event planning industry sometimes have event planner jobs and opportunities posted by employers. You can also make an "event planner job wanted" post on one of these boards and see what comes back to you.

More than that, you should take the opportunity to network with other event planner industry pros on the boards. You might meet up with someone who has an event planner job to offer or who can supply a lead to a job with an industry associate. You should visit these boards often and check the postings.

A listing of event planning industry bulletin boards is included in Chapter Two of the Event Planner Guide available at How-to-Become-an-Event-Planner.com.

Classified Ads or Career Opportunity Ads In Your Local Newspaper

Of course, if you are looking for event planner jobs, your own local paper is another resource you'll want to be checking faithfully. Your paper may or may not have a heading entitled "events", but because the responsibilities associated with event planning jobs sometimes also overlap with the responsibilities of other types of jobs, you'll also want to be sure to check headings such as "administrative", "sales and marketing", "public relations", and "hospitality" (often labeled as "hotel and restaurants"). Scan the job descriptions for event-related positions.

Approach Employers of Event Planner Jobs Directly

Once you've identified the employers in your area who you know are very likely to have jobs for event planners, you can approach them directly.

Obvious choices will be event planning companies, convention and conference centers, hotels and resorts, banquet centers, and CVBs. You will find them listed in your local Yellow Pages directory.

Also keep your eyes and ears open for events taking place within your area, then approach the organization who is producing or hosting the event about any event planner jobs they may have available currently or in the near future.

Make a phone call to ask for the contact name, email address, fax number, phone number and mailing address for the person responsible for hiring event planners. From there, you can take one of two possible approaches.

You can submit your resume "cold", along with a well written, enthusiastic cover letter in which you introduce yourself and explain that you hope they will keep your resume on file and consider you for any upcoming event planner jobs which you may be suitable for.

Or you can do something far more powerful; once you have the name and number of the individual in charge of hiring event planners, telephone that person to introduce yourself. Politely ask if you might have a few moments of their time to discuss any possible opportunities which they may have coming available in their event planning department over the next several months. Take this opportunity to display your enthusiasm for the event planning field and to making them aware of any qualifications and experience you may have which makes you a good candidate for any event planner jobs they may be hiring for either now or in the near future.

A related, but slightly different approach is to arrange an "informational interview". We'll talk about that a little more in the next section.
