Many
cities have event planning firms or event managment companies which
may handle everything from bar mitzvahs to product launches, or
alternatively, may specialize in one specific niche market of the
event planning industry. A lot of these firms are growing in size
quickly because of the increasing demand for event planners. Many
companies or organizations which need the services of event planners
don't have their own in-house event planning staff and therefore all
of their events get out-sourced to event planning companies /
professional event planners, keeping these firms incredibly busy, and
making them an excellent place to begin your search for event planner jobs.
Event planners of
all types are hired by event planning firms. Just make sure to choose
the firm that specializes in or handles the specific types of events
you have chosen to specialize in.
If you are
interested in planning social events such as parties, reunions,
weddings, galas, fundraisers and so forth, event planning firms are
one of the major employers in this segment of the market.
Many event
planning firms are willing to provide you with training if you have
no previous background in event planning, provided you are willing to
work for a decreased rate of pay from what they typically pay their
planners. You may also be offered an opportunity to work as an unpaid
intern, meaning you work strictly in exchange for the on the job
training and experience you will receive. This is certainly a fair
trade. The experience you can obtain through one of these firms will
prove invaluable to your career and after paying your dues, and you
will quickly be able to move on up to better paying positions.
Typically
internships are offered only by very successful and well established
event planning firms. If you are seeking out an internship as a means
of obtaining training and experience as an event planner, don't be
surprised if you hear a lot of 'No's. While an internship sounds like
a good way to break into the event planner field in theory, the
reality is that a lot of employers in this field shy away from
offering event planner internships because they don't wish to
"train their future competion". To avoid this problem, seek
out only the leargest event planner companies in the area - the ones
that already seem to have the market cornered with more clients then
they can shake a stick at. They are less likely to be concerned about
any possible competitive threat you may pose to them. You might also
consider temporarily relocating to another city to find an event
planner internship. If the employer understands and feels confident
in the belief that you will not ultimately be competing with them in
their local market, they may be more willing to allow you to intern
with them as an event planner.
Event planning
companies are an excellent place to start when breaking into the
event planning industry so it can be a smart move on your part to
offer to apprentice with such an event planning company if that's
ultimately what it takes to get a foot in the door as an event
planner with one of these companies. The excellent and indepth Event
Planner Guide
available from How-to-Become-an-Event-Planner.com
offers a full discussion of apprenticeships and how they work in
section 3.1.9. Apprenticing involves working for little or no pay in
exchange for the training you will receive on the job and for the
opportunity to gain valuable experience.
An apprenticeship
with an event planning firm will very often turn into a paid position
with the company, making it an all the more worthwhile approach.
Small Event Planning Firms
Some event
planning companies are small, in which case most - if not all - of
the work is commonly handled by the owner (usually themselves an
event planner), or owners. They are not likely to be offering
permanent event planner jobs, and on the rare occasion that they do,
the pay is not typically great.
Event planner jobs
which arise with small event planner companies are more likely to be
on a casual, contract, or 'per project' basis. In other words, you
only get called to work on the odd occasion when the event planner
company is xperiencing an overload of work that needs to be done.
There are, of course, always exceptions to the rule, but this is the
typical scenario for the small event planning company.
If, however, you
are having trouble getting an event planner job, or otherwise having
trouble breaking into the event planning business, keep this option
in your back pocket as another way to get a foot in the door. Even
work done on a temporary or casual basis as an event planner will
provide valuable opportunities to gain on-the job skills and event
planner experience, and will give you something to fill in the gaps
on your resume.
Larger Sized Event Planning Firms
On the other side
of the coin is the large event planning firm, typically found in
large metropolitan cities that have good economic health and elements
of affluence. These firms sometimes employ up to one hundred event
planners and handle a variety of different types of events. As such,
large event planning firms are often a good source of event planner jobs.
Best Ways to Event Planner Jobs With Event Planning Companies
There are a lot of
event planning companies out there, and therefore they are a good
source of event planner jobs. More and more of them are popping up
all the time. You can locate event planning companies in your area by
checking your local Yellow Pages under the headings
"Events", "Special Events", "Event
Management", "Event Production", or "Event Planning".
Additionally, the
internet is crawling with listings and web pages for event planning
companies. You can use an interent search engine to search the term
"event planning firm", "events", or "event
planning". Add the name of the city or cities you want to find
event planner jobs in to narrow your search results.
Another excellent
way to find event planning companies to contact about event planning
jobs is to visit the various event planning web sites which have
listings or directories of event planning firms.
If you are
interested in an event planning job where you will be planning social
events more so than planning business events, large event planning
conmpanies are where you will need to focus your effort. That's the
profile of the typical employer for that segment of the event
planning industry.
